Clusters of vibrant purple berries on a green leafy plant.

American Beautyberry (Callicarpa americana) is a standout deciduous shrub native to the Southeastern United States. It is most famous for its stunning, metallic-purple fruit clusters that wrap around the stems in late summer and fall, providing a visual pop that few other plants can match.

Plant Profile & Characteristics

  • Appearance: A large, arching shrub that typically reaches 3–8 feet in height and width. It has light green, fuzzy leaves that turn a soft yellow in the autumn.
  • The Fruit: While the small pinkish flowers in spring are modest, the "beauty" appears in August and September. The tightly packed clusters of bright violet-to-purple berries are a showstopper. There is also a white-berried variety called C. americana var. lactea.
  • Natural Repellent: Crushed beautyberry leaves contain compounds like callicarpenal, which have been traditionally used (and scientifically shown) to repel mosquitoes and ticks.

Growing & Care Essentials

  • Sunlight: Thrives in full sun to partial shade. While it grows naturally in the understory of pine forests, you'll get the most fruit production if it receives at least a few hours of direct sun.
  • Soil: Highly adaptable. It prefers moist, rich soil but is incredibly forgiving of Florida's sandy, nutrient-poor soils.
  • Watering: Moderately drought-tolerant once established, but it will drop its leaves prematurely if it gets too dry for too long.
  • Pruning: Since it blooms on new wood, it can be pruned back heavily in late winter (down to 12 inches) to encourage a fuller shape and more vigorous berry production.

Ecological Value

  • Wildlife: The berries are an important food source for over 40 species of birds, including mockingbirds, catbirds, and finches. They are also eaten by foxes, raccoons, and deer.
  • Pollinators: The tiny spring flowers are a favorite for bees and butterflies.
