Discover The Green Leaf Nursery's Beautiful Plants

Butter Crunch

Buttercrunch is the classic "Butterhead" lettuce that gardeners love because it stays sweet and crunchy long after other varieties have turned bitter in the sun.

Why It’s a Florida Favorite

  • Heat Tolerance: As the name suggests, it stays "crunchy" and is much more heat-tolerant than most other bibb-style lettuces. This makes it perfect for our Dunnellon "shoulder" seasons.
  • Velvety Texture: It produces a small, compact head with thick, succulent leaves that have a buttery flavor and a satisfying snap.
  • Award-Winning Heritage: It’s an All-America Selections winner from the 1960s that has remained a top choice for home gardeners for decades because of its reliability.

Black-Seeded Simpson

Black-Seeded Simpson is one of the most reliable and fastest-growing lettuces you can offer. It is a classic heirloom that has been a favorite for over 150 years because it handles heat and drought much better than most other varieties.

Why It’s a Nursery Essential

  • Incredibly Fast: It’s often ready to harvest in just 45 days, making it an "instant gratification" plant for your customers.
  • Heat Tolerant: It is remarkably slow to bolt, which is vital for the fluctuating temperatures in Dunnellon.
  • Beautiful Texture: It produces large, ruffled, light-green leaves that are incredibly tender and sweet.
  • Continuous Harvest: Your customers can use the "cut and come again" method, harvesting just the outer leaves while the center keeps growing.

Red Sails

Red Sails

Red Sails

Red Sails is the most popular red leaf lettuce for Florida because it stays vibrant and sweet even when the sun gets intense. It’s a perfect "color pop" for any garden.

Why Red Sails is a Southern Winner

  • Unbeatable Heat Tolerance: It is famous for being one of the slowest red lettuces to bolt. While other red varieties turn bitter quickly, Red Sails stays buttery and mild.
  • Vibrant Color: The leaves are a beautiful deep bronze-red at the tips, fading to a soft green at the base. The color actually gets more intense as the weather gets cooler, but it holds up well in the heat.
  • Large & Prolific: It produces large, ruffled heads that can grow up to a foot wide, though it’s just as good when harvested early as a baby leaf.
  • Nutrient Dense: Those red pigments mean it's packed with antioxidants (anthocyanins) and has more Vitamin A than many green varieties.

Romaine

Red Sails

Parris Island Cos is the definitive romaine for Florida gardens. It was specifically bred in the Southeast to handle the humidity and "bolt" (turn bitter and flower) much later than other varieties when the heat kicks in.

Why It’s a Florida Essential

  • Heat & Humidity Champion: Developed by the USDA and Clemson University, it is one of the most durable lettuce varieties for Southern weather. It holds its sweet flavor even as temperatures climb toward 80°F.
  • Upright & Space-Saving: It grows in a tall, compact 8–12 inch head, making it perfect for your small-scale home nursery or for customers with limited garden space.
  • Exceptional Texture: It features dark green outer leaves with a creamy white heart that provides the classic "crunch" needed for Caesar salads.
  • Disease Resistant: It has natural resistance to tipburn and mosaic virus, which are common issues in our local environment.
