Blue Mistflower (Conoclinium coelestinum)

A Sea of Soft, Azure Blooms

Blue Mistflower is a standout in the Florida landscape, loved for its unique, "fuzzy" clusters of bright blue to violet flowers. It provides a soft, airy texture to garden borders and is one of the most prolific nectar sources for late-season butterflies and bees.

Why It’s a Nursery Favorite

  • Incredible Color: One of the few native plants that offers a consistent, true blue-violet hue.
  • Butterfly Buffet: It is a magnet for smaller butterflies, such as Hairstreaks and Blues, as well as the larger Monarchs.
  • Versatile Growth: Thrives in those tricky damp spots in the yard but adapts beautifully to standard garden beds.
  • Late-Season Power: While other plants may start to fade, Blue Mistflower keeps the garden vibrant and the pollinators fed.

Planting & Care Guide

Light: Full Sun to Partial Shade

Water: Moderate to High (Loves moist soil)

Soil: Adaptable; thrives in rich, moist, or sandy soils

Height1–3 feet tall

Bloom Time: Summer through Late Fall

Gardener's Tip: Blue Mistflower spreads happily via underground rhizomes. If you want a lush "blanket" of blue, let it wander! If you prefer a tidy look, it’s easy to thin out in the spring.

Perfect Pairings

The cool blue of the Mistflower provides a stunning contrast to the warm tones of our other favorites:

  • Gaillardia (The blue-and-orange combo is a classic "complementary color" showstopper)
  • Tropical Sage (Red spikes rising out of a sea of blue mist)
  • Butterfly Milkweed (To create a complete Monarch habitat)
