Welcome to The Green Leaf Nursery's Plant Nursery

Sabal Palm

Sabal Palm

Sabal Palm

The Sabal Palm (Sabal palmetto), also known as the Cabbage Palm, is the quintessential Florida tree. Since it is our State Tree and incredibly resilient, it deserves a top spot in your Large Palms category.

Why You’ll Love the Sabal Palm

  • Florida Native: It is perfectly adapted to our climate, making it exceptionally easy to grow in the Dunnellon area.
  • Tough as Nails: This palm is salt-tolerant, drought-tolerant, and can even survive temporary flooding once established.
  • Cold Hardy: Unlike some tropical palms, the Sabal Palm handles Central Florida freezes with no problem.
  • Low Maintenance: Once its root system is set, it requires very little care other than the occasional trimming of dead brown fronds.

Garden Uses & Care

  • Sunlight: Best in full sun, but it is adaptable enough to grow in partial shade.
  • Size: It can eventually reach heights of 40–50 feet, providing a beautiful skyline silhouette.
  • Landscape Value: Use it as a stately focal point, in a row to line a driveway, or as a natural canopy for birds and local wildlife.
  • Establishment: When first planted, be generous with water until the root system takes hold.

Royal Palm

Sabal Palm

Sabal Palm

The Royal Palm (Roystonea regia) is the ultimate symbol of tropical elegance. While they are more common in South Florida, they can thrive in our area if given the right spot.

Why You’ll Love the Royal Palm

  • Stately Appearance: Known for its massive, smooth, concrete-like grey trunk and a bright green "crownshaft" at the top.
  • Massive Canopy: It produces long, feathery fronds that can reach 10–15 feet in length, creating a grand, formal look.
  • Self-Cleaning: One of the best features for homeowners—the old fronds fall off on their own, meaning you don't have to hire someone to trim them.
  • Fast Growing: For a large palm, it grows relatively quickly once it is established in the ground.

Garden Uses & Care

  • Sunlight: Requires full sun to maintain its vigor and iconic shape.
  • Water & Fertilizer: They are "heavy feeders." They love regular watering and a high-quality palm fertilizer to keep that crownshaft a vibrant green.
  • Cold Sensitivity: In the Dunnellon area, they should be planted in a protected spot (like the south side of a building) to shield them from the coldest north winds.
  • Size: These are giants! They can reach 50–70 feet tall, so make sure they have plenty of room to grow upward.
