Muhly Grass (Muhlenbergia capillaris), specifically the Pink Muhly variety, is one of the most stunning ornamental grasses available for Southeast landscapes. It is famous for its "pink cloud" effect in the fall, which transforms gardens into a hazy, ethereal landscape.
Plant Profile & Characteristics
- Appearance: For most of the year, it is a neat, clump-forming grass with fine, blue-green needle-like foliage. In late September through November, it produces delicate, airy seed heads (panicles) that hover above the foliage like a vibrant pink or purple mist.
- Growth Habit: Typically grows in a rounded mound about 2–3 feet tall and wide. It is non-invasive and stays in a tidy clump rather than spreading aggressively.
- The "White" Variety: There is also a cultivar called 'White Cloud' that produces a snowy, creamy white mist for those who prefer a more neutral color palette.
Growing & Care Essentials
- Sunlight: Requires full sun (at least 6–8 hours). Shadier spots will result in floppy stems and significantly fewer "clouds" in the fall.
- Soil: Very adaptable but must be well-drained. It thrives in sandy or rocky soils and is an excellent choice for poor soil where other plants struggle.
- Watering: Highly drought-tolerant once established. In fact, overwatering or keeping the soil too soggy is the most common way to kill it.
- Hardiness: USDA Zones 7–11. It is exceptionally heat and humidity-tolerant, making it a Florida staple.
