Discover the Beauty of Green Leaf Nursery

A hummingbird and a butterfly feeding on purple flowers in a garden.

Blue Porterweed (Stachytarpheta jamaicensis)

 The "Electric" Pollinator Powerhouse

Blue Porterweed is a Florida favorite for its unique "rattail" spikes adorned with small, brilliant blue-to-purple flowers. A low-growing, sprawling perennial, it is famous for its ability to attract an incredible variety of butterflies and hummingbirds from sunrise to sunset.

Why It’s a Nursery Standout

  • Constant Bloomer: Produces fresh flowers daily on its long, green spikes throughout the warm months.
  • Hummingbird Essential: Along with Tropical Sage, this is one of the top plants for attracting hummers to your yard.
  • Native Hardiness: Our Florida native Porterweed is naturally resistant to local pests and thrives in our unique climate.
  • Versatile Groundcover: Its sprawling habit makes it an excellent choice for borders, rock gardens, or as a vibrant filler between larger shrubs.

Planting & Care Guide

Light: Full Sun to Light Shade

Water: Moderate; prefers regular watering but is drought-tolerant once established

Soil: Adaptable; thrives in sandy or well-draining garden soil

Height1–3 feet (with a wider spread)

Bloom Time: Year-round in South Florida; Spring through first frost elsewhere

Gardener's Tip: In the spring, give your Blue Porterweed a light trim to encourage a bushier shape and even more flowering spikes!

Perfect Pairings

Create a high-traffic pollinator zone by planting Blue Porterweed with:

  • Tropical Sage (The red and purple contrast is a hummingbird's dream)
  • Gaillardia (For a "wildflower meadow" look with pops of yellow and red)
  • Swamp Milkweed (To provide a host plant for Monarchs right next to a nectar source)
