Vinca (specifically Catharanthus roseus, or Madagascar Periwinkle) is a powerhouse annual for hot, sunny landscapes. It is beloved by gardeners for its glossy green foliage and its ability to produce a carpet of color even in the most punishing summer heat.

Depending on your garden layout, you might choose between two main growth habits:

• Upright Vinca: Grows into a neat, mounded bush about 12–18 inches tall. It’s perfect for borders or mass plantings where you want a uniform look.
• Trailing Vinca: Spreads horizontally and cascades beautifully over the edges of containers or retaining walls. It usually stays low to the ground (4–6 inches) but can trail up to 2 feet.

• Sunlight: Thrives in full sun to partial shade. In extremely hot climates, a little afternoon shade can help the flowers stay vibrant, though the plant itself can handle the heat.
• Temperature: Unlike many other annuals, Vinca loves the heat. It shouldn't be planted until the soil is warm and the threat of frost is long gone.
• Watering: Once established, it is remarkably drought-tolerant. It prefers to dry out slightly between waterings. Avoid overhead watering if possible, as wet foliage can lead to fungal issues.
• Soil: Requires well-drained soil. It is prone to "damping off" or root rot if the soil stays soggy for too long.
• Feeding: Use a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer once a month to keep the blooms coming through the autumn.

Bloom Time: Early summer until the first hard frost.

Colors: White, pink, rose, red, apricot, and lavender (often with a contrasting "eye").

Pest Resistance: Highly resistant to deer and rabbits due to its bitter sap.

Maintenance: Self-cleaning; no deadheading is required to keep it blooming.
