Kewalo Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum)

Beliy Naliv Heirloom Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum)

Beliy Naliv Heirloom Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum)

The Kewalo tomato is a powerhouse variety specifically bred by the University of Hawaii to handle the exact conditions you face in Florida—high heat, humidity, and intense pest pressure.

Why It’s Perfect for Your Nursery

  • Heat & Humidity Hero: Unlike many large slicers that stop setting fruit when nighttime temperatures rise, Kewalo was bred to thrive and produce in tropical heat.
  • Determinate (Bush) Habit: It stays compact, making it ideal for the container gardening your customers likely enjoy. It reaches maturity in about 75–80 days.
  • The "Bulletproof" Profile: It is an open-pollinated variety with an incredible resistance package, protecting against:
    • Bacterial Wilt (a major killer in Florida soils)
    • Fusarium Wilt (Race 1)
    • Root-Knot Nematodes
    • Spotted Wilt Virus and Gray Leaf Spot

Fruit Characteristics

  • Size: Produces uniform, glossy red fruits weighing 6–8 ounces.
  • Flavor: Known for a sweet, classic tomato flavor without the metallic or "alkaloid" aftertaste sometimes found in other wilt-resistant varieties.

The name "Naliv" translates to "getting juicy" or "ripe," and this variety is highly prized for its incredible speed and reliability.

Why It’s Great for Your Customers

  • Ultra-Early Harvest: It is one of the fastest tomatoes you can grow, often reaching maturity in just 54–60 days. This is perfect for the short spring growing window in Central Florida.
  • Compact Growth: It is a determinate (bush-style) plant that stays around 2–3 feet tall. It’s a top choice for container gardening or small raised beds.
  • Heavy Producer: Despite its small size, it produces an abundance of 2–4 oz red, round fruits.
  • Sweet & Tangy: It has a classic, old-fashioned tomato flavor that is much richer than the "early" varieties found in big-box stores.

Bella Rosa

Beliy Naliv Heirloom Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum)

10 Fingers of Naples (Dieci Dita a Napoli)

The Bella Rosa is a top-tier hybrid for Florida gardeners who want that "perfect" slicing tomato. It’s highly productive and specifically bred to handle our humidity.

Why You’ll Love the Bella Rosa

  • Heat-Set Superstar: It is famous for its ability to set fruit even when the temperatures and humidity are high.
  • Large, Firm Fruit: Produces beautiful, round, 10–12 ounce bright red tomatoes that are firm and slice perfectly for sandwiches.
  • Disease Resistance: It has a high resistance to many common Florida issues, including Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus and Fusarium Wilt (Races 1 & 2).
  • Compact Growth: As a determinate variety, it stays at a manageable size (about 3–4 feet), making it great for cages or large pots.

10 Fingers of Naples (Dieci Dita a Napoli)

The 10 Fingers of Naples (Dieci Dita a Napoli) is a legendary Italian heirloom that is perfect for anyone who loves making home-made sauces or pastes. Its name comes from the way the fruits grow in heavy, finger-like clusters.

Why You’ll Love 10 Fingers of Naples

  • The Ultimate Paste Tomato: Similar to a San Marzano but even more productive, these pointed, plum-shaped fruits have thick walls and very few seeds, making them the gold standard for sauces.
  • Massive Clusters: The name isn't just for show—this variety produces heavy bunches of 5–10 tomatoes at a time, looking almost like a hand of red fingers.
  • Rich Flavor: It has a deep, traditional Italian tomato taste that intensifies when cooked down into a sauce or paste.
  • Prolific Producer: This is a vigorous indeterminate (vining) variety that will keep cranking out fruit all season long until the first frost.

Garden Uses & Care

  • Sunlight: Needs full sun to develop its characteristic deep red color and rich flavor.
  • Support: Because of the weight of the fruit clusters, this plant absolutely requires a sturdy trellis or cage.
  • Soil: Prefers well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. Like most paste tomatoes, it benefits from consistent calcium levels to prevent blossom end rot.
  • Spacing: Give it plenty of room (at least 24–36 inches) to allow for good airflow through its dense foliage.

San Marzano

10 Fingers of Naples (Dieci Dita a Napoli)

Everglades Cherry Tomato

The San Marzano is the most famous paste tomato in the world, renowned for its thin skin, thick flesh, and sweet, low-acid flavor. Since you're building a "What's Growing" row for your nursery, this is a heavy-hitter to include.

Why You’ll Love San Marzano

  • The Chef's Choice: It is the gold standard for canning and making authentic Italian tomato sauces because it has very few seeds and a high "meat-to-juice" ratio.
  • Balanced Flavor: It offers a complex, sweet-yet-acidic profile that intensifies and sweetens significantly when cooked.
  • Heavy Producer: This is an indeterminate (vining) plant that will continuously produce heavy clusters of 3-inch, elongated fruits throughout the season.

Garden Uses & Care

  • Support is Key: As a vigorous vining plant, it definitely needs a sturdy cage or trellis to keep the fruit off the ground and prevent rot.
  • Florida Tip: To succeed with San Marzano in Central Florida, ensure your soil has plenty of calcium (like crushed eggshells or lime) and keep your watering consistent to prevent Blossom End Rot, which this variety is prone to.
  • Sunlight: Requires full sun for the best yield and to develop that deep red color.

Everglades Cherry Tomato

10 Fingers of Naples (Dieci Dita a Napoli)

Everglades Cherry Tomato

The Everglades Cherry Tomato is essentially the "gold standard" for Florida gardening. It's a wild-type tomato that has naturalized in our state, making it virtually indestructible compared to more sensitive hybrids.

Why You’ll Love the Everglades Cherry

  • Indestructible: It thrives in the exact conditions that kill other tomatoes—high heat, intense humidity, and heavy pest pressure.
  • Massive Yields: A single plant can produce hundreds of tiny, pea-sized fruits that are incredibly sweet and flavorful.
  • Continuous Harvest: While other tomatoes quit in the summer, this variety will produce fruit right through the heat of July and August.
  • Low Maintenance: It is highly resistant to most diseases and doesn't require pruning or fancy fertilization to succeed.
